Private Schools
All Special Education Local Plan Areas (SELPAs) within Los Angeles County, known as the Greater Los Angeles Area SELPAs (GLAAS), have a local agreement pertaining to students with or suspected of disabilities parentally placed in private schools. Parents whose children attend a private school located within Los Angeles County boundaries who suspect their child has special needs are encouraged to contact the special education department in their District of Residence. Parents who reside outside of Los Angeles County whose children attend private schools within the Mid-Cities SELPA who suspect their child has special needs are encouraged to contact the special education department of the district where the private school is located.
Child Find for Private School Students
The Mid-Cities SELPA is responsible for Child Find activities for students enrolled in private schools located within SELPA boundaries, which encompass the geographic boundaries of the Bellflower, Lynwood, and Paramount Unified School Districts. Child Find is a federally mandated process to identify, locate, and evaluate students who are suspected of having a disability and who may be eligible for special education services.
If you have concerns about a private school student’s academic progress, development, speech and language, behavior, or other areas of suspected disability, you may complete the Child Find: Special Education Services Request Form below. This form may be submitted by parents/guardians, private school staff, or any individual who suspects that a student may have a disability.
After a request is submitted, Mid-Cities SELPA will review the information and contact the parent/guardian regarding next steps in accordance with Child Find requirements, procedures, and timelines. Submitting a request initiates the Child Find review and consideration for an evaluation to determine potential eligibility for special education services.
